History

An independent custodian, The Mumbai International Airport Pvt Ltd (MIAL), was appointed on May 3rd, 2006, to look after all cargo terminal handling including exports and imports. Export and Import warehouses have storage facilities for all kinds of cargo. Special cargo like dangerous goods, perishables, valuables, live animals, heavy/odd-sized cargo, and cargo requiring temperature control can also be accommodated.

A tailor-made Custodian management system (GALAXY) has been acquired by MIAL to electronically interact with its trade partners. It has further enhanced the capability of the Information Technology application through introduction of Ground Handling Application (GHA) and GMAX (GVK MIAL AIR Xchange).

MIAL is now capable of exchanging all the IATA C2K messages with the airlines with the introduction of the GHA application. GMAX aims to be a unified electronic platform that will strengthen digital interface between the cargo terminal operator and all air cargo stakeholders including customs, customs brokers, airlines, consolidators, break-bulk agents, shippers/consignees and other statutory bodies.

Facilities

Perishable cargo handling facility that features a capacity of over 40ULDs, temperature range from -20°C up to 15°C, temperature monitors and data loggers.

The import cold zone has a holding capacity of up to 860 metric tonnes, humidity controlled and vacuum dewatered flooring, and infrared thermometers.

Increasing security regulations, stricter compliances, and a pressure on efficiency to reduce transaction costs have make digital exchange of information imperative. As a significant trade facilitation measure, allowing trade with automated tools to enhance operational efficiencies, MIAL has created India’s first airport cargo community system GMAX – GVK MIAL Air Exchange. It facilitates the movement of goods and information by offering a comprehensive electronic data interchange service platform connecting all air cargo stakeholders at the airport. It aims to put an end to the current manual processes, multiple data entries, and improve transparency in the supply chain.

There are two upcoming facilities. The Export Heavy & Bonded Cargo Terminal, and the Santacruz Air Cargo Terminal. While the former will have an area of 7500sqm, dedicated material handling equipment and CCTV surveillance, the latter is planned to have an area of 5634sqm, with similar aforementioned facilities along with special facilities like cold storage, a strong room, and live animal room.
